RESPONSE

TO: Mr. Steven Edwards of the National Post
RE: Your Article: "Ottawa submits to UN racism inspection"

You said in your article yesterday, February 27, 2002, "Canada has some of the world's toughest anti-racism laws. The Heritage Department promoted February as Black History Month, while March 21 is the International Day for the Elimination of Racism."

Please! in Saskatchewan and specifically in Regina, you barely know these celebrations exists. An obvious bigot (weather man) on the local CTV noon news was interviewing a black female university of Regina student and a white male university of Regina student about their activities for Black History Month. The interviewer interrupted the black student and said, there is no need for awareness these days like there was 20 years ago. That white interviewer is in denial, obviously.

What concerned me as a Black man is the fact that neither the woman student or the man student bothered to challenge the erroneous and mis-informed statement by the interviewer because, he said it in a threatening and intimidating manner.

I sent the dumbo an e-mail. Needless to say, he NEVER responded back to me...the racist retard! And I didn't use this type of language that I'm using now. This person hit a nerve with me because he was to much of a coward to defend his statement.

That particular local TV station has not endeared itself to me anyway because, on another occasion during the noon news the news director announced the launch of a local native indian (Aboriginal) web site. I e-mailed him to get the exact web site address, as I didn't get all the address during the announcement. The next day, the news director responded back to me with the web site address only, and absolutely nothing else--not even a "hello", or "thank you for writing", or anything--just a web site address. He didn't even put my name, or his, on the e-mail. Now what is that!? I call it a form of "covert" discrimination. And this guy is the station's news director! Dr. Cornel West wrote in his book, Race Matters, "Overt forms of discrimination have been attacked and forced to become more covert. The interviewer and the news director no doubt reflect the attitude of perhaps many of the stations employees, it's affiliates, and the station's owner(s).

Also, I am so sick and tired of this TV station and other media referring to negative incidents involving Aboriginals using their first, [middle], and last name! They do not use the [middle] names of Caucasians when they report negative incidents about them, most of the time. Quite frankly, we minorities know that this form of identification is a code tactic to let non-minorities know that the person is a minority, specifically Aboriginals in Canada. The same form of "covert" discrimination happens in the U S of A when the media gives the names of Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and Latinos!

Your article has some good points. Keep on keeping on. Peace.

Regards,

Ed L. McQuarters
