AFRICAN AMERICAN PROSE

WALKING IN THE RAIN
By Cikeithia Sellers

Sidewalks
Wet from the pouring rain
I'm splashing water
My feet are getting closer
No umbrella to hold
Daydreams are refuge
'Cause reality's gone bad
Lame excuses pound my temples
For the mess of life I've made

Stray dogs pass
Looking as if I'm their long lost master
If only they could speak
Friendship I would capture
Rain running down my face
Or was it tears that took its place
Cars rushing to destinations
Traffic lights flashing
Adding to things already failing

In my world coldness sets in the air
A brief moment of happiness grows on my face as I see
A couple playing in the rain

The image disappeared
Realizing it was a mirage
That took my view of a special person
I no longer knew
Now rain and coldness hold my hand
Smiles, laughter, and warm tender kisses
Far away but never forgotten
Closing my eyes
Feeling the warmth inside
Knowing that I don't have to die from memories
Rain subsiding and the sun rising
Spirits lifted from my heart
Reminiscing
Accepting that rain and pain
Never last forever
